When a person makes the decision to change the way they live in terms of their nutrition and eating habits, it often does require a significant change to the way they live. As such, there are several factors that must be considered in order for any Atkins participant to place him or her self in a position that will allow them to succeed with a low-carb diet.

Preparing yourself for the coming of a low-carb diet means much more than just saying so. In fact, there are a few changes and preparations that need to take place in order for the low-carb diet to actually stand a chance of succeeding.

The fist change that needs to take place is in the area of food. The Atkins diet requires that participants cut down on the overall intake of carbohydrates to levels that do not go above 20 grams per day. Though the levels of carbs consumed on a daily basis slowly rise over the course of the diet, the initial induction phase is the most important phase of the diet. A day dedicated to cleaning up the high-carb foods in a refrigerator or pantry cabinet can help make room for all of those new low-carb foods that will now fill your home.

In accordance with getting rid of the high-carb foods in a home in preparation for a low-carb diet is a day dedicated to finding low-carb alternatives to those foods that were just eliminated. Most individuals are surprised to find that many of the foods they like to eat are available in a low-carb form that still manages to taste great. When it comes to a low-carb diet, most individuals struggle because they do not take the time to get rid of dangerous high-carb foods in order to replace them with low-carb alternatives.

Surrounding yourself with sources of information regarding low-carb diets is also a good move when beginning (and even when trying to maintain) a low-carb diet. Cookbooks and websites dedicated to low-carb meals and recipes can serve as a good source of information for new low-carb dieters. After some time, individuals will be able to develop their own personal low-carb menu, but in the meantime, there’s nothing wrong with asking for a little bit of help.

The final consideration that should be made on the part of anyone taking on a low-carb diet or low-carb lifestyle is to inform the individuals around you that they are doing so. Letting friends and family members know that you are planning on starting a low-carb diet can in some cases help them encourage you to stay on course. Though by no means should you try to convince others to join you, there is certainly nothing wrong with educating those around you about what your goals are and how you plan on reaching them. Many times, people are really interested in what a person is doing to lose weight and get healthy. Simple and basic information about the diet might even encourage others to try the same.

One of the best features of the Atkins diet is that it allows participants to consume just about any type of food available, so long as it is low in carbohydrates. For participants with a sweet tooth, Atkins can bring both good and bad news for some participants in terms of desserts, since the Atkins diet limits number of carbohydrates that an individual can consume over the course of a day.

Participants in the Atkins diet literally have hundreds to thousands of dessert recipes that are considered acceptable under the diet’s guidelines. Most of the time, the carbohydrates that can undermine the Atkins diet come in the form of simple sugars. In desserts, these simple sugars appear in the form of sweeteners. In order to conform to the Atkins dietary standards, most desserts are sweetened with sugar substitutes like Splenda, NutraSweet, or Equal.

According to research carried out by Atkins experts, Splenda is the artificial sweetener of choice for Atkins dieters for several reasons. Splenda for starters, measures out in the same amounts as regular sugar, so no conversions are needed when cooking with it. Additionally, Splenda is made with sucralose as its base ingredient, which makes it perfect to be used in baking.

The following are two examples of Atkins approved dessert recipes. Though these are just two recipes, the truth is that just about any recipe, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, can be tailored to fit in with the Atkins dietary guidelines. Most of the time, the only changes that have to be made to a traditional dessert recipe is to change the type of sweetener that is used. When making changes to other types of recipes, such as breakfasts, lunches, or dinners, it typically requires the elimination of any bread or sources of starch and replacing them with low carb substitutes or alternatives.

Recipe 1: Cinnamon Meringues

Ingredients:

2 egg whites
¼ teaspoon of cream of tartar
dash salt
½ cup of Splenda
2 teaspoons of powdered cinnamon
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
½ teaspoon of almond extract

Preparation:

In a medium bowl, combine the egg whites with the cream of tartar and the salt. Beat the mixture until it forms soft peaks.

Fold in the cinnamon powder and the vanilla and almond extracts.

Using a tablespoon measurement, drop the meringues by tablespoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet and bake them at 300 degrees for about 30 minutes.

Recipe 2: French Silk Pie

Ingredients:

½ cup of softened or room temperature butter
½ cup of Splenda or other form of artificial sweetener / sugar substitute
2 oz unsweetened baking chocolate
1 teaspoon of vanilla
½ cup of refrigerated or frozen egg product (i.e. egg beaters)

Preparation:

Stir the butter and Splenda together until they attain a creamy consistency.

Melt the chocolate and blend it into butter mixture after it has cooled. Stir in the vanilla and add the chosen egg product. Use an electric mixer to make the mixture smooth.

Chill the mixture for 1 to 2 hours minimum. When ready, top with sugar free whipped cream if desired.

When the Atkins diet first appeared in the 1960’s, it started a dieting revolution that eventually led to the publishing of best-selling books that today have sold more that 10 million copies combined. While the diet faded slightly during the 1980’s, it experienced a resurgence during the 1990’s.

Essentially, the Atkins diet is based on the idea that the body can be converted or tricked into burning something other than carbohydrates in order to obtain the energy needed to perform basic biological functions. Under the idea of the Atkins diet, if an individual reduces the number of carbohydrates that they consume, it is possible that the body will turn elsewhere to find the energy it needs. In the case of the Atkins diet, the goal is to encourage the body to burn fats. The burning of fats instead of carbohydrates in order to obtain energy eventually leads to an increase in weight loss versus other types of diets.

In order to determine if the body of an Atkins dieter is actually burning fats instead of carbohydrates, a test is performed in order to check for the presence of ketones in the urine. Ketones are the by-product of fat burning. As the diet progresses, the participant dieter slowly reduces the amount of carbohydrates that are consumed until a specific level is reached. This level is referred to as the Critical Carbohydrate Level and is the point when ketosis stops. Carbohydrates are then slowly reduced in order to continue with weight loss.

What makes the Atkins diet so unusual is that it is able to achieve significant weight loss results by encouraging the consumption of foods that most other diets strongly restrict. It almost seems contradictory to say that a diet that allows people to eat all the proteins, fats, and oils that they want can actually help them lose weight, but it is true. Atkins considers carbohydrates to be the main contributor to individual weight gain in people. Since some carbohydrates take a long time to metabolize, a diet high in carbs that is coupled with poor exercise is bound to cause a person to gain weight over time.

As part of the Atkins diet, participants can enjoy a diet that is rich in foods like meat, cheese and oils, to name a few. The only true thing that the Atkins diet places restrictions on is the consumption of carbohydrates, which often occur in the form of sugars and starches. As long as individuals are able to keep track of the number of carbohydrates that they consume, every other type of food is fair game.

What most people find interesting about the Atkins diet is that despite the fact that it basically allows people to eat whatever they want, it still manages to yield significant results in terms of weight loss. Participants often report positive results in as little as a week or two after going on the Atkins diet. Some recent studies have also shown that the Atkins diet also helps reduce the overall number of triglycerides in the body while also helping to raise the body’s levels of HDL or “good” cholesterol.

Those opposed to the Atkins diet often consider it a diet that encourages malnutrition, since it essentially encourages participants to eat foods that are high in fats and oils while restricting the consumption of carbohydrates. Many equate it with a type of starvation, since it is so restrictive in terms of the carbs that can be eaten. However, supporters of the diet point to the fact that the diet does allow for the consumption of carbohydrates, to a certain degree or level.

The Atkins diet plan is based on the idea that the body can be “tricked” into burning fats instead of carbohydrates by lowering the amount of carbohydrates that a person consumes. Since the body does not have access to carbs, it will naturally look to a different source of energy in order to be able to carry out its daily activities.

The Atkins diet is made up of four phases, appropriately named induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance, and maintenance. Although an Atkins dieter can actually begin the Atkins diet from any phase, most typically begin at the induction phase.

The first phase of the Atkins diet is known as the induction phase. The induction phase is the strictest of all the Atkins phases, as its goal is to encourage a process known as ketosis, where the body begins to burn fats after being basically deprived of carbohydrates. During induction, dieters cut back on the number of carbs they eat to no more than 20 grams per day. This is a very important factor, and failure to stick to this established number will usually work against an Atkins dieter. It is during this induction phase that weight can be lost rather quickly. Protein and fats make up the majority of the foods allowed during induction, while carbs in this phase typically come from vegetables. The induction phase is meant to last for two weeks.

The second phase of the Atkins diet is known as the ongoing weight loss phase. During the second phase of the Atkins diet, carbs are gradually added to the diet, and individuals begin to lose one or two pound per week. At some point, the dieter will determine how many carbohydrates they can eat while still being able to lose weight. This point in the diet is known as the Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing. Carbohydrate levels are increased in increments of 5 grams. Typically, the second phase of the Atkins diet lasts until the participant is 5 to 10 pounds away from their intended weight loss goal.

The third phase of the Atkins diet is known as the pre-maintenance phase. During the third phase, weight loss begins to slow down as carbohydrates are slowly added to the original allowed amount of 20 grams per day. At some point in the third phase, participants will be able to figure out how many carbs they can eat without gaining any weight. This period in the diet is called the Atkins Carbohydrate Equilibrium. Typically, 10 grams of carbohydrates are added every day, and large high-carb treats can be eaten several times a week. Essentially, during the third phase, participants are well versed and knowledgeable about what their bodies can take in terms of carb intake.

The fourth and final phase of the Atkins diet is known as the induction phase. Generally, this phase lasts forever. Everything that an individual has learned during the first three phases is applied here, especially in terms of how the person’s body is responding to the diet itself. With everything that has been learned during the first three phases, an individual will be well prepared to maintain their diet and their weight over the entire course of their life if they so wish. With an effective understanding of the body’s needs, a diet can be developed in order to help the individual maintain the weight that he or she has deemed to be ideal.

At various times of the year, individuals everywhere make the decision to begin a diet plan. Many times, people who make the decision to begin a diet, low-carb or otherwise, do so without being fully educated about the requirements associated with it. When it comes to the Atkins diet, there are a few things that participants can do to make sure that the diet is as successful as they want it to be.

As is the case with most people, many Atkins dieters believe that there is an absolute end to the diet, meaning that they establish a weight-loss goal and once it is attained, the diet can be stopped. The fact is that if a diet is going to be successful, individuals have to be willing to make a complete lifestyle change. Most people fail when they diet because the use it only until they are able to reach a certain point. In reality, the diet must be maintained in perpetuity if the weight-loss is going to be maintained.

In terms of the Atkins diet, it is important for participants to understand that low-carb does not mean no-carb. Even though the diet recommends the consumption of high amounts of cheese, meat, and eggs, it does not mean that these should be the only foods a person should eat. It is important for Atkins dieters to remember that the diet does make room for certain amounts of carbohydrates to be eaten every day. Carbohydrates are important for basic biological functions, and as a result, Atkins dieters should make room for the occasional low-sugar fruit and the occasional low-carb vegetable.

The first few days or weeks of a diet can be very difficult for people. When diets fail, they often fail during the early days of the diet. With this in mind, individuals need to make sure that they have patience in order to allow the diet to do its job. Sometimes, Atkins dieters find that their energy levels drop off during the initial phases of the diet. Atkins experts recommend energy supplements in order to help individuals boost their energy while their bodies adjust.

When it comes to any diet, it is important for individuals to give themselves a reward from time to time. Unfortunately, most dieters make the mistake of rewarding themselves with sweets and high-carb foods, a decision that only works to undermine the work that the diet has already done. Instead of turning to junk food for rewards, consider activities that do not involve foods that are generally known to be bad for Atkins dieters. Some experts suggest rewards like a pedicure, a glass of wine, or even a new item of clothing. Diets can be tough to maintain, and rewards can go a long way towards making sure that a person feels that the diet is worth doing.

Perhaps the one factor that contributes most to the failure of an Atkins diet is a person’s failure to read the labels on the food they eat. Hidden carbs can bring any Atkins diet crashing down. Carbohydrates can hide anywhere, and when a person fails to find them, the Atkins diet is essentially negated when a person thinks they are eating low-carb food, but they actually are not.

Despite an existing misconception, most dermatologists will tell you that a particular diet can neither cause nor help eliminate acne. There is however, evidence that certain types of foods can contribute to the severity of acne in some individuals. In other words, if you are meant to get acne you will, and as a result it is important to stay away from foods that can work to make the situation worse.

There are some types of foods that have been shown to make acne worse, though again this only happens in certain individuals. Three of the most “popular” foods that have been shown to increase acne breakouts include vegetable oil, chocolate, and products that are high in caffeine, such as coffee and soft drinks. Most of these foods cause an increase in acne by causing certain hormones in the body to become imbalanced. Though there are other contributing factors to the appearance of acne, most cases are caused in some way by hormones and hormone imbalances.

Since certain types of foods have been found to contribute to the appearance and severity of acne, it is natural to assume that there are some dietary approaches that an individual can take to try to lessen or perhaps even prevent acne.

One recent study in Australia actually looked specifically at the Atkins diet to determine how its dietary approach contributed to the appearance and severity of acne in some individuals. In this particular study, 50 individuals suffering from acne were divided into two groups of 25 each. One group was given a diet that was rich in processed foods, and the other was given a diet similar to the Atkins diet, meaning they ate foods that were high in protein and low in carbohydrates. The results of the study showed that the group that was placed under the Atkins diet, meaning the group that participated in a low-carb, high-protein diet, actually showed a measurable and noticeable reduction in their acne.

As a result of this Australian study, experts are now beginning to theorize that since the foods in the second group were more protein-based, they somehow were able to maintain blood sugar levels at a moderate range. Some evidence suggests that high blood sugar levels can contribute to acne outbreaks, thus by maintaining low blood sugar levels, the dieters in the Atkins diet group were able to reduce their acne.

One study is not nearly enough to determine that there is a significant link between acne and the Atkins diet. Since Atkins does reduce the amount of carbohydrates that an individual consumes, and evidence shows that high blood sugar levels can contribute to acne breakouts, it seems like an obvious assumption to say that if carbohydrates are reduced, then there should be an associated reduction in acne. However, the contradictory statement to this assumption reminds us that fats and oils can also contribute to acne breakouts, and since Atkins encourages individuals to eat a diet rich in fats an oils, it stands to be assumed that as much as Atkins can help reduce acne by encouraging a low-carb diet, it can also increase acne by encouraging a diet high in fats and oils.

When it comes to the Atkins diet, most people understand the premise that participants can consume just about any food that they want, given it is low in carbohydrates. Unlike other diets, Atkins does not restrict the amount of other important foods and nutrients that an individual can consume. In fact, other than regulating the number of carbohydrates consumed, Atkins encourages the consumption of just about everything else.

Essentially, the Atkins diet is a low carbohydrate, high protein and fat diet. Most of the protein consumed by an Atkins dieter comes from sources of meat such as fish, beef, or pork. However, there are other ways for an Atkins dieter to acquire the protein that Atkins encourages.

One of the best sources of protein for an Atkins dieter is through the consumption of various types of nuts. Nuts can be both beneficial and problematic for an Atkins dieter. On one hand they do represent a great source of proteins, but on the other hand some nuts also pack a great deal of carbohydrates into their very small packages. Any Atkins dieter who looks to nuts and seeds as a way of obtaining protein should be careful to choose only those nuts and seeds that are low in carbohydrates. Since proteins, oils and fats are allowed by the Atkins diet, the main concern for a dieter in relation to eating nuts should be the amount of carbs they contain.

For an Atkins dieter, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, and almonds represent nuts with some of the lowest numbers of carbs. For each 2 tablespoon serving, pecans contribute 0.6 grams of carbohydrates, while walnuts contain a total of 1.1 grams of carbohydrates for every 2 tablespoon serving. A 2 tablespoon serving of hazelnuts contributes just 1.2 grams of carbohydrates, while 2 tablespoons of almonds contain just 1.4 grams of carbohydrates. Other nuts that are low in overall carbohydrates include macadamia nuts, peanuts, and pine nuts. Overall, cashews, chestnuts and pistachios represent the nuts with the highest counts of carbs, with chestnuts typically containing the highest overall totals of carbohydrates, regardless of the serving size being used.

When it comes to the carbs contained in certain types of nuts, the best advice that an expert will provide is not so much to avoid eating certain ones, but to limit the amount that is eaten. After all, there is something to be said about the old adage that states that “too much of a good thing is not good”. Nuts may in fact be good for an individual’s health on any level. They may provide an Atkins dieter with an excellent source of protein, but the best advice for any Atkins dieter when it comes to including nuts in their diet is to control the portions. Most diet experts recommend that dieters pour out their measured amount of nuts onto a container then put the rest of the nuts away. Most of the time, people who get too many carbohydrates from nuts do so because the container is easily accessible to them.

Most people mistakenly believe that fruits are not allowed by certain low carbohydrate diets. Fortunately for fruit lovers, this is not true. Though some low carb diets like the Atkins and South Beach diets do not recommend that participants eat fruits in the early phases of the diet, most low carb diets do allow for the consumption of a few carbohydrates from certain fruits throughout the diet.

When it comes to making fruits a part of a diet, low carb or otherwise, most experts will tell you that some of the fruits that are most beneficial and nutritious for the human body are also quite low in sugar. These low sugar fruits are often rich in antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients, making them the perfect addition to any low carb diet.

For any individual who has decided to begin a low carb diet, it is important that he or she is made aware of the fruits that are most high in carbs, as well as the fruits that contain the lowest amount of carbs. The carbs contained by most fruits usually appear in to main form: cellulose and sugar. Cellulose, which is a complex carbohydrate, is usually found on the outside of the fruit, typically the skin. Cellulose works to give fruits their structure and shape, and though it is not digested by the human body, it does contribute a fair amount of carbohydrates. The main carbohydrate found in fruits is sugar. Sugar is of course what gives fruits their sweet taste. Common sense will tell anyone that the sweeter the fruit, the more sugar it contains, and thus the more carbs it contains. Fruits are after all, referred to as nature’s candy.

In a limited sense, the two fruits that an Atkins dieter really wants to stay away from are bananas and mangos. Anyone who has ever eaten one or the other will certainly attest to their sweetness. Additionally, fruits like kiwi, pineapples, oranges, grapes and tangerines are also relatively high in sugars, though the do not contain as many as both a banana and a mango can contain.

By far the most dangerous type of fruit for anyone who is taking part in a low carb diet is any fruit that has been dried. Drying fruit actually works to concentrate the sugars it contains, not to mention the fact that in some cases, fruits that are dried often have sugars added to them. Raisins and prunes are definitely two fruits to stay away from, or at least consume in limited quantities.

The good news for fruit lovers on a low carbohydrate diet is that the list of low carbohydrate fruits is actually longer than the list of fruits that are high in carbohydrates. This means that in limited quantities, anyone participating in the Atkins diet can enjoy the sweet, sweet taste of a fresh piece of fruit. According to experts, the fruits that have the lowest sugar content include berries, especially strawberries, blackberries, cranberries, and blueberries. Also included on the list of low sugar fruits are melons, apricots, plums and peaches, as well as grapefruit, pears, guavas, and cherries, not to mention papaya and good old-fashioned apples.

The ultimate goal of the Atkins diet is to cause an individual to lose weight by inducing a process known as ketosis. Ketosis results when the body is forced to burn fats as a source of fuel after being knowingly deprived of carbohydrates. Since the body no longer has carbs to burn, it will naturally turn to an alternate source of energy.

The problem with the ketosis associated with low-carb diets is that ketosis can actually change the body’s biochemistry, causing an increased need for certain nutrients and minerals. Without certain minerals, ketosis may no longer take place and weight will no longer be lost. Another problem associated with ketosis is that it can have a negative effect on kidney function, as the additional ketones that the body produces during the burning of fats can often cause clogging in the kidneys.

One of the main problems associated with ketosis is that it often leads to the formation of free radicals. Free radicals are detrimental to the general health of people because they can damage blood vessels and also promote the growth and occurrence of certain cancers. Ketosis-generated free radicals can also work to accelerate cell damage and cause vascular disease. For these reasons, products that contain antioxidants can be beneficial in fighting off the free radicals that can result from ketosis over the course of a low-carb diet. Since a low-carb diet often causes levels of free radicals to rise, it seems natural that products that can combat free radicals should also be a part of any low-carb diet.

Antioxidants have the ability to combat the body’s free radicals. Free radicals are substances known to be linked to the destruction of cellular DNA that in turn results in the formation of several types of cancers. Antioxidants help prevent cancer by preventing the damage that free radicals can do to cellular DNA.

One of the best additions to any low-carb diet is a good daily dose of green tea. Green tea contains high levels of substances known as catechin polyphenols. In particular, it contains high levels of epigallocatechin gallate, which is also known as EGCG. Most experts know EGCG as a very powerful antioxidant. Since participants in low-carb diets often have increased levels of free radicals in their bodies, the antioxidant properties of green tea often prove very beneficial in fighting off these dangerous and cancer-causing substances. Besides being able to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, the antioxidants in green tea have also been shown to have the ability to kill cancer cells without doing any damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.

Green tea has also been shown to be an important factor in lowering LDL or “bad” cholesterol levels, while also being able to protect against the formation of blood clots. The second contribution becomes even more important when one considers that blood clots are a major cause of heart attacks and strokes.

The additional benefits of green tea to a low-carb diet include the fact that green tea helps in the oxidation of fats. In fact, green tea has actually been shown to increase metabolism, a factor which in the case of the Atkins diet, actually contributes to the burning of additional levels of fats.

Diabetes exists in two forms, type 1 and type 2. Type 1diabetes is a condition that individuals are born with. Essentially, individuals with type 1 diabetes are insulin-dependent, meaning that their body does not produce insulin and they therefore have to take insulin injections in order to help maintain the appropriate levels in their body. Type 2 diabetes is a condition that can develop over time and is related in part to an individual’s lifestyle. Those with type 2 diabetes must constantly monitor and maintain their blood sugar levels, usually through diet and exercise.

For individuals with type 2 diabetes, a low-carb diet like the Atkins diet can be very beneficial to their overall health. The main lifestyle change that an individual with type 2 diabetes needs to make is to control their blood sugar levels by controlling the amount of sugars and carbohydrates that they consume. The Atkins diet is perfect for these individuals since it helps them control the amount of carbohydrates that they consume on a daily basis.

The requirements for the Atkins diet are that participants consume very low levels of carbohydrates every day. The diet sets the level of carbohydrates to be consumed at no more than 20 grams per day. Slowly and over the course of the diet, participants can raise their carbohydrate levels to 40 or even 60 grams per day.

The benefit of the Atkins diet for individuals with type 2 diabetes is that it basically allows the participants to handle two situations at one time. On one hand, dieters are managing their weight by managing their carb intake. On the other hand, by managing their carb intake for weight loss purposes, they are also making sure that they keep their type 2 diabetes under control.

There are a few warnings that experts give to anyone with type 2 diabetes that is considering taking on something like the Atkins diet. Some experts have found that diets high in protein can actually overstress and overload the kidneys, often leading to damage that can result in kidney failure. Sine individuals with diabetes are already prone to suffering from kidney disease, a diet that places added stress on the kidneys is something that should be undertaken with caution.

The other cautionary statement associated with a low-carb diet has to do with the low carb nature of the diet itself. With a maximum allowable level of carbs set at no more than 20 grams per day during the Atkins diet induction phase, there is the increased risk that an individual who is not careful will see his or her carbohydrate levels drop to dangerous levels. In some cases, individuals who have their blood sugar levels drop to very low levels because of a low-carb diet often run the risk of passing out or developing tremors. In some cases, individuals on low-carb diets like the Atkins diet have had their blood sugar levels drop so low that they have even fallen into diabetic comas.

When it comes to the association between the Atkins diet an individuals with type 2 diabetes, most experts agree that the main benefit is the very nature of having to watch the number of carbs that are consumed. Since high levels of carbohydrates can make a type 2 diabetes situation much worse than it is or has to be, it is natural to believe that a diet that controls the level of carb consumed will be able to help a person with type 2 diabetes. Despite the cautions and warnings from experts, a low-carb lifestyle is certainly not a bad move for anyone with type 2 diabetes to consider.
